My name is Mikaela Whitmer. I am in my third year of college at Nova Southeastern University. I was interviewed and accepted into the “Razor’s Edge Shark Cage Program” and the “Huizenga College of Business” which is a scholarship program outlined for students interested in gaining skills to launch a business and develop an entrepreneurial mindset. In order to gain this experience, all third year students have to startup & operate a business. I started "Painting on the Edge," (2021) showcasing my hand painted canvases, swordfish bills, and wine glasses that are for sale in the Shark Cage. Please visit our instagram to see all of my creations and art journey.

Born and raised in Deerfield Beach, FL, my infatuation with the ocean was bred when I was born. My passion for art sparked at a young age. Since then, I continued creating. I illustrate and paint all marine life, especially fish. Simply anything that has to do with the sea. I can paint on anything from canvases to swordfish bills. Apart from my art, I focus on The Trash  Can Slam Fishing Tournament that benefits Autism. I have created & host the tournament annually. Each year I design a logo for the T-shirts.

WhitMermaid Art/ Painting on the Edge is a relatively new business. I am a freelance artist. I specialize in painting/illustrating on Swordfish Bills. Broadbill Swordfish are known for their upper jawbone (a rostral bone), which they use to help stun and catch their prey. Preserving this bone is a long and stinky process, it takes about one to two months to drain all the oils out. Having an artist illustrate on a sword bill holds its value and memories for the crew who caught it. I love preserving and working with this particular bone. It is a unique canvas. I obtain these bills from my commercial sword-fisherman friends and other fisherman who want their own bills custom painted. I started painting on bills a couple of years back and as I progressed, different people kept encouraging me, wanting their own bills painted custom.  Please contact me if you are interested in custom work.
